5 reasons your business won’t get DFI funding- even if your numbers are good.
I’ve structured transactions ranging from €9M to €50M with the IFC, World Bank IDA, and DEG. Here’s what I see kill deals that should have closed:
1. Your story doesn’t fit the DFI mandate. DFIs aren’t commercial banks. They invest where there’s measurable development impact — jobs, climate, gender, food security. If your pitch deck doesn’t speak that language, your deal is dead before the term sheet.
2. Your governance is a family WhatsApp group. If your board is your spouse, your cousin, and your auditor’s nephew — pause the fundraise. DFIs underwrite governance before they underwrite numbers.
3. Your financial model is a wishlist, not a model. A 40% revenue CAGR with no cohort data, no unit economics, and no sensitivity analysis is not a model — it’s a prayer. DFIs read sensitivities first.
4. You’re raising debt when you need equity (or vice versa). The most common mistake I fix: founders asking for €20M of senior debt when their balance sheet can carry €5M. Mismatched capital structure = automatic decline.
5. You’re treating ESG as compliance theatre. DFIs invest in ESG. Period. If you can’t articulate your environmental footprint, your labour standards, and your community impact in 30 seconds — you’re not ready.
Here’s the truth: getting capital from a DFI is not harder than commercial debt. It’s different. The institutions are looking for very specific things, and once you understand the unlock, the door opens.
If you’re building a business in Cameroon, Gabon, the CAR — or anywhere in Central Africa — and you’re trying to figure out whether your deal is DFI-ready, my DM is open.
